Ingredients

  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 2 bananas (this is great for using up your over-ripe bananas)
  • 2 tbsp soy milk (almond milk works great too!)
  • 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups quick cooking or rolled oats
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips or raisins
  • ¼ cup canned pumpkin (optional)

Equipment

  • a fork or potato masher
  • big bowl
  • cookie sheets

Instructions

What You Do:

  • Make sure your children wash their hands before they get started.  This is a great chance to instil good habits and thoughtful practices as they learn to prepare food.
  • In a big bowl, mash bananas with a fork until smooth, take care as the bananas are slippery at first! (A potato masher can make this part a bit easier)
  • Next, add the peanut butter and give it a good mix.
  • Add the soy milk, vanilla, sugar and pumpkin. Mix it well.
  • Now let them add the remaining ingredients: flour, oats, chocolate chips and/or raisins and stir it until everything’s completely combined.
  • Next, get a spoon and let them drop spoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Help your child by putting the cookie sheet into the oven and bake at 350 degrees (175 °C) for 13-16 minutes, or until done.
  • Depending on the size of your spoonfuls this recipe will yield more than two dozen yummy bites!

Notes

Gluten allergy? It’s possible to make this recipe gluten-free by using gluten-free flour or omitting the flour completely (the texture will be a bit different but the cookie will still hold up). Make sure to that you have oats that are certified gluten-free; oats don’t actually have gluten in them but they can be exposed to wheat and other ingredients during the manufacturing process.

Mmm, dipped in milk these would be scrumptious! I love oat chocolate chip cookies 🙂
Are these cookies fairly dense? Whenever I put banana and oats together in cookies they seem to be really hard.
My secret for chocolate chip cookies is that I always freeze the dough for a couple hours and it makes the texture so chewy and perfect! I wonder if it would work with these?

Hi, Alexandra, The recipe was provided education.com but I made these with the kids prior to putting the post up (the photos are mine). Yes, they are fairly dense but they did disappear fairly quick (nothing lasts long in this house). I think when we make them again I will possibly add a tiny bit more sugar and I may also try your tip about freezing the dough first. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Yes we like them, my kids are also addicted to our British flapjacks which are also made with oats (although there nowhere near as healthy as these), I’m famous for these. 😉

Yes, it really is a case of chucking it all in and mixing – if you look at my other recipes you’ll see I like easy (and quick) recipes.

Yum! These look great. I gained my love of baking from helping my mum in the kitchen, so I think it is a great idea to encourage this kind of collaborative cooking!

Yes me too, I was always in the kitchen with my mum and I remember how my mum could (and still can) just cook everything from her head without a recipe.
