Last year I had a go at stencilling on burlap (jute) and all in all I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Burlap is a really popular choice these days for a whole host of projects and stencilling is really easy and effective way to add a little design touch to all your fab craft ideas.

(I used plain acrylic but if you are planning to wash the item you will need to mix with a fabric paint)

Paint brush or sponge

Stencil or print out (see below)

Plate or container for paint

Appropriate size piece of cardboard or plastic for placing under material

(to stop paint seeping through to the surface / material underneath)

‘How To Stencil On Burlap’

1.   Stencil

Find a suitable image on-line and print it out on to a piece of A4 card.
I found a really great high res image here;

*Tip – chunkier stencils work better on burlap because of the course weave of the material*

2.   Cutting Out

Using a cutting mat (or other hard protective surface) and a craft cutting knife (or stanley knife) carefully cut the image out making sure you use a smooth and clean cutting motion to avoid any jagged edges.

(if you don’t want to do this step you can always use a shop bought stencil)

3.   Protect Surface / Material

Insert your piece of cardboard inside the cushion or directly under your project where you are planning to stencil.

4.   Secure Stencil

Using either the re-positionable adhesive spray or double-sided sticky tape securely fix the stencil on to the material.

5.   Painting

Squeeze some of the acrylic paint on to your plate and using a sponge or paint brush evenly dab or stipple the paint on to the stencil.  Be careful not to overload your brush or sponge and build up in layers being careful not to push brush under the stencil.

* Tip – have a test run on a spare piece of material *

6.   All Done!

Carefully remove the stencil ‘Et Voila!’ there you have it, your own work of art!
