Curtains & Bedding To Re-Invent The Bedroom!

If you are looking to freshen up your home decor then one of the most budget-friendly ways to do this is to update your soft furnishings.

And with a stylish range of modern bedding and cheap curtains from Yorkshire Linen, you can easily create a contemporary and gorgeous home!

By using cheap curtains and bedding, you can not only get a whole new look but can also create a totally different atmosphere.  Simply changing the colour, the material and the style of your soft furnishings can have a major impact on any home.

For instance, in the bedroom, a crisp white cotton can give a room a fresh airy feel whilst darker colours and curtains made from a heavier material will create more drama.  Shiny, silky, glittery materials can add a touch of luxury and wool and other soft materials will add warmth.

So, are your bedrooms neglected and crying out for an update?  I know mine are (well 3 of them) and I think that I am not the only one who has left their bedrooms until last.

It’s quite normal to want to put most of your spare budget into decorating the downstairs rooms because this is where we all spend most of our time with family and friends.

However, I do think that the bedroom space should not be overlooked and should come a little higher up on our priority list.  After all, we spend a third of our lives there!

So, if you are working to a tight budget one of the easiest ways you can makeover and update your bedroom is to freshen up the look with new bedding and curtains.  Even if you don’t have the time or the money to do anything else this can be enough to give your room a new lease of life and a different look.

By replacing your old tired looking soft furnishings you will not only breathe new life into your bedroom but it can also have health benefits.  When you create a fresh calming space it will help you to relax and get a much better night’s sleep.

Finding the right colours, textures and styles has never been easier, even if you are on a tight budget it really doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

With everything from knowledgeable specialist shops to discounted outlet stores, there is certainly no shortage of places where you can find expert advice and a great selection of textiles.

If you are too busy to go trailing about the town to find what you need, it is also possible to easily shop from the comfort of your own home using one of the really handy online retail stores.

These can be super convenient for busy working people and mums alike, not only will they provide you with a wealth of colours and styles but with a great amount of inspiration too.

Many of these companies have look-books and images of well-styled bedrooms that you can use to see which colours and styles you like and help narrow down the look and feel that you want for the room.

These are some of my favourite online home textile shops that are around at the moment.

Tips For Choosing Your Ideal Bedding & Curtains

Curtains

  • Linen, silk, faux silk and velvet are very popular choices for bedroom curtains.
  • Consider using either a heavier material or lined curtains for the bedroom to give you more privacy and keep the light out of the room.  The heavier materials such as velvet, suede, tweed or tapestry can also help to insulate your room.

  • If you do want to choose light floaty materials then it can be a good idea to use an additional roller blind.
  • Think about whether you machine washable curtains or if they are dry clean only.
  • If you get a lot of sun in the room avoid bright colours which can easily fade.
  • Decide how long you want your curtains and measure carefully.  Interior designers very often like to hang curtains about 6″ above the window frame.  If you want a more dramatic look then opt for curtains that go from the ceiling to the floor – this is a trick that lots of hotels use to make the rooms look more spacious and stylish.

Bedding

  • Thread count (the number of threads per square inch of fabric) – this is what everyone is talking about and whilst it is important do not be fooled into thinking that this is the be all and end all.  In theory the higher the thread count the more durable the material should be but a lot of companies have falsely inflated the thread count to make poorer quality materials look better.

  • For your bottom layer choose a plain, light neutral colour for a crisp, fresh look.  I personally am a big fan of fitted sheets but I guess that is because I pretty much always opt for the easy option.
  • Decide if you want a valance sheet (it fits on the bottom of the bed under the mattress and goes down to the floor).  These can help create a luxury hotel look.
  • Your bed takes up a very large part of your room, not only physically but visually too, so choose your quilt or duvet very carefully.  If you do want to choose a heavy pattern then it is better that your walls are plain (and vice versa – if you have patterned wallpaper then opt for a less busy pattern or plain bedding).
  • Pillows – when you buy a duvet set it normally comes with matching pillowcases but it’s also good to have extra pillows in a different shade that can complement the rest of the set.
  • Scatter cushions – this is where you can really play with the look of the bed and create a bit of drama – have fun with them!
  • Throws & comforters – soft fleece and woollen blankets can add additional depth to the overall look and create a warm cosy feel.

Home Decor Accents

So once you have sorted out your bedding and curtains you then have a great base to bring in other inexpensive elements and little touches.

  • Avoid completely bare walls and choose at least one large piece of artwork (this can be a decorative mirror, picture, intricate rug), whatever you like but be sure that you really love it.  Hang this in a place where it will receive a maximum impact and get noticed; above your bed or above a dresser are good examples of places where you can hang your show pieces.  A few more pieces of are also welcomed but just be careful not to go overboard and make the space too busy.

  • Bedside table – I think this is a must, somewhere to put a lamp, your glass of water and a good book. These are generally not very expensive to buy new but you should also consider buying one from a charity shop or garage sale where they can be easily found.  It can be a lot of fun hunting around for interesting bargains.
  • Lighting – make sure you keep the lighting soft (use low watt bulbs).
  • A big basket or ottoman at the end of the bed is also a great idea so that you have somewhere to put your extra pillows when you go to bed at night.
  • Rug – if you have a wooden floor it is a good idea to add a rug.  If you don’t have the budget for a big one you can put a small soft snugly one at the side of the bed.  After all who wants to step out on a cold had floor in the mornings.
